WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
OFFICE OF CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION

 MISSION STATEMENT

The goal of the Office of Continuing Medical Education of the West Virginia University School of Medicine is to offer Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities to physicians and other health care providers in West Virginia and the surrounding region.  These activities will be offered at primary clinical campuses, outreach sites, and various other locations throughout West Virginia and the surrounding region. The purpose of these educational activities is to assist providers in maintaining and enhancing their clinical competence in order to promote high quality health care.

The following goals will serve as guidelines:

1.      To offer a comprehensive program of CME regarding current diagnostic and therapeutic modalities.

2.      To offer a diverse set of educational opportunities that will assist practitioners in meeting CME requirements mandated by state and specialty societies.

3.      To familiarize practitioners with the latest developments, resources, and facilities available at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center.

4.      To provide opportunities for practitioners to use self-directed CME learning activities such as the Visiting Clinician program and personalized learning opportunities.

 5.      To offer innovative, interactive program formats to increase educational content retention.

6.             To advance emerging communications technology as a medium for providing CME.

7.             To assure that all WVU sponsored CME activities are in accordance with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education Essentials and Standards.

 8.          To jointly sponsor educational activities with other organizations who have as their primary mission the delivery of quality health care or the provision of health related education.

9.             To promote educational activities on primary care, rural health issues, health care delivery systems, preventive care, and specialty care that address the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in West Virginia and the surrounding areas.

10.         To increase knowledge and clinical competence, ultimately effecting a positive change in the health status of the population.
